Myka

Unraveling - Warehouse 13 (1/1)

TITLE: Unraveling - Warehouse 13 (1/1)
AUTHOR: rhyfeddu
RATING: PG, but don't let that put you off.
SUMMARY: Myka/HG. Immediately post Emily Lake/Stand.
DISCLAIMER: As always, everything here belongs to other (much more wealthy) people. I'm just having fun.
A/N: It's a rite of passage in this fandom to try your hand at a finale fix-it fic, right? Tardy effort, but here it goes. I've not read them all, so don't know if this is offering anything necessarily new, but it needs exorcising from my brain, so here it is...

Except The Heart That Lit Me - Warehouse 13 (1/1)

TITLE: Except The Heart That Lit Me - Warehouse 13 (1/1)
AUTHOR: rhyfeddu
RATING: PG-13, a few references to some pretty nasty violence.
SUMMARY: presumed HG/Myka. Set between “Trials” and “3..2..1”.
Myka is back at the Warehouse, but is having trouble adjusting.
DISCLAIMER: As always, everything here belongs to other (much more wealthy) people. I'm just having fun.
A/N: Title is from “Dark Night of the Soul” by St. John of the Cross.

Also, I’ve been assimilated by the tumblr collective. If you want to check out my general obsessions and get the very occasional fic notices, find me HERE.

Cagney & Lacey

VOTE for Cagney and Lacey - on DVD!

Some of you might remember "Cagney and Lacey", most of you probably don't.

But all our current favorites have a definite debt to pay to them: Catherine Willows and Sara Sidle, Olivia Benson, Kalinda Sharma, Brenda Leigh Johnson, Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles, and so on and on, were all preceded by Detectives Christine Cagney and Mary Beth Lacey.

Cagney and Lacey were real, flawed, recognizable people. And as much as I enjoyed (the original) Charlie's Angels and the like at the time, these two were the first TV women that were really convincing at welding those guns and taking down the perps.

It wasn't a comic book, it wasn't a fantasy, it was a drama - timely, often gritty and it depicted a fascinating friendship between the two women with depth and humor (that was deliciously slash-able, I admit). Every week they effortlessly passed "The Bechdel Test" (#1 It has to have at least two women in it, #2 Who talk to each other, #3 About something other than a man).

Simply put, they changed the game. And they got alot of damn Emmys to show for it.

There has been some inexplicable dragging of the heels to put out the remaining seasons on DVD (only the first one with Sharon Gless has been released). The producer of C & L (Barney Rosenzweig) has put out the word that there is finally some hope of the rest of Cagney and Lacey being offered on DVD - but apparently MGM still needs proof that there is enough interest (but ya know, Mr. Ed - the talking horse - has his DVDs out). Mr. Rosenzweig is asking that people get their votes in by the end of this week!

So, please all lovers of kick ass, intelligent and slash-able women! Please go to this OFFICIAL SITE and VOTE for the remaining CAGNEY AND LACEY DVDs to be released!

Whether out of true interest, solidarity or a little appreciation for their pioneering ways, PLEASE VOTE NOW. Thanks!

Light LotS

Happy Endings (Legend of the Seeker - Kahlan/Cara)

TITLE: Happy Endings (2/2)
AUTHOR: rhyfeddu
RATING: PG, pre-slash - but lots of it. Approximately 12,600 words.
SUMMARY: Happy Endings - Some work out, some don't. Kahlan/Cara, talk of Richard/Kahlan. Immediately Post-Tears.
DISCLAIMER: As always, everything here belongs to other (much more wealthy) people. I'm just having fun.
A/N: I employ some time jumps in the narrative - some small and some large. I also try and make some sense of the muddled show!canon here. If I've made it even worse, please forgive me. I also use an image of Cara in the last scene that I first read in someone else's fic - but I can't remember whose! Sorry I can't properly credit, but thanks for that idea that never left me!

TARDIS - Doctor Who

"Don't Forget Me."

ELISABETH SLADEN 1948 - 2011

What was it about Lis Sladen?

Her portrayal of "Sarah Jane Smith" was so utterly charming, witty, endearing and adorable and (that much maligned quality) spunky. It was obvious the actress was enjoying herself tremendously, not taking herself too seriously and loving the absurdity of it all. Yet she took the storytelling seriously. And she managed to ground this most unreal of shows in all too human realness. Real feelings, real loyalties, real humor. She made us all believe in what we were seeing and let us play and pretend, because she made us believe Sarah Jane was experiencing it and believing it. Even when the budget sometimes meant the sets rocked when you closed the door or the alien of the day looked cobbled together from last week's. We cared about what happened to Sarah Jane. She was our hero.

Elisabeth had talent.

And Lis never condescended about being on this "mere children's show". She committed whole heartedly to this made up universe with a magical Police Box and an epic friendship with an eternal Lord of Time. She was gracious and grateful that she somehow stumbled into this iconic role in a BBC institution. She was unfailingly kind and generous with fans over the years. I've never heard a bad thing said about this lady. And if she was ever frustrated that her career was limited by being so connected and identified with Doctor Who, she never let it show. She didn't gripe. She didn't roll her eyes at it. She happily fostered that connection with the show and with her fans, with grace and optimism, for 38 years. She seemed genuinely fond of this character she'd created. And rightly proud.

Elisabeth was a class act.

She also has set the standard for "companions" on Doctor Who. She's the yard stick that everyone else will always be measured by. She was just that perfect. Sarah Jane was the perfect best friend who always, always had your back and was more than ready to share the next adventure with you.

In interviews again and again, Lis stressed how Doctor Who was ultimately a story, or rather many stories, about friendships, about being brave, about being more than you thought you could ever be. About relationships. About curiosity. And striving to do the right thing. The Aliens were just a fun way to tell these stories.

That's a fine public legacy to have.

This stranger who has long admired Elisabeth has lost a little bit of her youth, her history with Elisabeth's passing. I can't imagine what her family and friends have lost. My utmost and sincere sympathies to her husband Brian, her daughter Sadie and the rest of Elisabeth's loved ones.

She will never be forgotten. And the stories she helped create will always be retold.

Action K/C

LotSeekerFic Awards!

Wow. My "Salvation Series" was awarded third place in the first LotSeekerfic Awards, in two separate catagories for the Kahlan/Cara pairing!

This was voted on by the readers themselves, so I'm very humbled and grateful that I got such a wonderful response and acknowledgment. Thanks to everyone who read my K/C series and thanks so much to anyone who voted for my stories! And thanks to those behind this Award effort and their amazing efforts to pull this wonderful event off.

And yes, this was very inspiring and motivating. I'm just polishing up another K/C story that should be posted in a week or so. :)

Brittana angst

On a Brittana High

I've had a not-so-secret soft spot for awhile now for those not-so-secretly queer Cheerios from GLEE, Santana and Brittany (Brittana for those ten people who don't know).

They were just undeniably cute together and entertaining and quietly subversive of expectations of what queer high school kids are supposed to be like. Admittedly, the show played a duck and dodge with some of that cheerleaders-gone-wild, girl-on-girl hawt!action that is usually the only version of this we ever see. But it was more dodge than not. These girls held pinkies down the school hallways, for cryin' out loud. And the actresses playing them, Naya Rivera and Heather Morris, are just scarily talented. So I couldn't help but like them, and yes, ship them like a fool.

I was content with the few token canon references the pairing were thrown, that made it official and I was relieved. And I was often even happier for the subtext the two actress seemed completely unable not do in the background of any shot they were in.

But the show happily stunned me with where they took this storyline in their last aired episode, "Sexy". It was front and center, treated with respect and not just the winking joke it had often been, and it was all heart and fragile ~feelings~ and the now infamous "locker scene" re-broke every heart that had ever been so freshly broken right out of the gate as a teenager in love.

I'll leave the eloquence of how awesomely this was handled and why it's still rattling in my brain and heart days later to [info]thejollyape, who gave a typically thoughtful review of Brittana in a recent journal post (really, go read it).

I just wanna celebrate the victory of this (yes, note perfect) visibility. And declare my timid hope that this is not a fluke for this show. Cause the possibilities are incredible. And while my heart might not be able to stand it, I'm willing to take the chance. Brittana - please remain "on"!!

(This vid is less Brittana heart and more Brittana hip work, but it makes me giddy and it is certainly "Sexy", so see, there's a theme.)

Light LotS

LotSeekerFic Nominee! & Salvation Series MasterLinks

My multi-chapter LotS story (dubbed the "Salvation Series") has been nominated for the LotSeekerFic Awards , in the K/C categories for both "Best Action/Adventure" and "Best Drama". How freaking cool is that??

Voting is from February 22 to March 22. It's frankly a great excuse to revisit or discover some fun LotS fics.

Sincere thanks to anyone who had a hand in nominating me. It's quite a kick. And yes, encouragement to get back to writing.

Since my story had separate chapter names (it seemed like a good idea at the time LOL) and might be confusing, I'm also taking this opportunity to post a Master List of Links to the story, in order.

Looking over it again, it's amazing how much I'm tempted to fiddle with it now, especially the earlier chapters. But I slapped my hands and left it as the artifact of the learning process it is. :b

It was a fun ride and I appreciate everyone who took it with me. Thanks!!

Charity Drive!

EDITED 12/23/10 to remove donate button. WE MADE OUR GOAL! Thanks everyone!!

I don't know why it hasn't occurred to me to have this on my personal journal before. Forgive me if this redundant for some of you, but... Part of the fan "thank you" by the Tabrett Bethell Appreciation Project is a charity donation drive in her honor, to go to the disaster and relief organization, Direct Relief International. We're collecting funds now!

Even if you're not a fan, f-listers (but really, why not? Have you seen her?), please consider getting into the seasonal spirit and give to a very worthy cause, and help us reach our goal. Modest donations are welcome - it all adds up!

Also, we have someone willing to match funds! Any money we gather, up to our goal of $2000, will be DOUBLED!! Yep, that means we could have $4000 to give in Tab's name.

"Direct Relief International provides medical assistance to improve the quality of life for people affected by poverty, disaster, and civil unrest at home and throughout the world. We work to strengthen the in-country health efforts of our partners by providing essential material resources – medicines, supplies and equipment.

Direct Relief was established in 1948 and is nonsectarian, nongovernmental, and apolitical. All the programs are provided in a non-discriminatory manner, without regard to political affiliation, religious belief, or ethnic identity."
